WBB Get Two and Just Miss Getting an Upset

SMC Women's Basketball continued to improve its positioning in the MCCAA Western Conference standings with a strong week.

On Monday, in the rescheduled game at Lansing, the Roadrunners gave the #4-ranked Lansing Stars all they could handle, but fell just short on the road, 60-59. SMC was down 10 after Q1 and 11 at the break, but turned the tables in Q3 and went into the final period tied at 46. SMC was down five with a minute to go but battled the whole way until a final free throw spun out and the Stars escaped. Sophomore guard Rayvan Rush had 20 points and 9 rebounds, Katlynn Williams-Clark contributed 12 points and Kayla Johnson did it all with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

Wednesday found the Roadrunners at Marian Ancilla to start the second wave of conference games, and they picked up the road W in another close one, 54-51. The Roadrunners were up seven at halftime, but the Chargers charged back to take a small lead towards the end of the game. But SMC buckled down, hit free throws and defended well to grab the victory. Scoring was balanced with Rush, Johnson and Trinity Dale logging 10 points each. Williams-Clark added 9 and Dee Robinson had 8.

At Lansing on Saturday, SMC broke out early and just kept going. It was all bangers, no skips as they defeated the Kellogg Bruins on the road, 80-44. SMC was up 4 after Q1 and up 11 at halftime, then turned on the jets in Q3, winning the period 26-9. Dale double-doubled with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals. Qimara Summers had 17 points and 7 rebounds and Robinson added 13 points and 6 boards.

SMC is now 11-10 overall and 5-3 in West. The Green and Gold finally come home to host GRCC on Wednesday, February 11, at 5:30.
