Women's Basketball Starts Season 0-2

SMC Women's Basketball started the season with two close losses at the Roadrunner Classic this weekend, with fans getting their first look at first-year Head Coach Ariana Dampier's Roadrunners.

SMC lost the home opener of the 2025-26 season to the Olive-Harvey Purple Panthers, 76-72 on Friday. The Roadrunners fell behind 17-10 in the first quarter as shots just would not fall, but they charged back to tie the score at 33 right at halftime. SMC again found themselves down eight at the end of Q3, but battled back with a few chances to tie or pull ahead near the end. Ultimately the 18 points they left at the free throw line (shooting just 11 of 29) throughout the contest loomed large. On Friday, the Roadrunners were led by freshman Qimara Summers, who shot 8 of 11 from the field for 18 points, sophomore Rayvan Rush with 16 and Katlynn Williams-Clark with 12. Sophomore Kayla Johnson had 9 rebounds and 7 points.

On Saturday, it was another tight one vs. Kennedy-King, with the home team falling 70-67. It was a back-and-forth affair all day, tied at the end of Q1, a 1-point game after Q3, and tied again at 67 with just 28.8 seconds left. The Statesmen were able to get a layup and a free throw to seal the win at the end. The Roadrunners were 23 of 77 from the field (29.9%) and led by Rush with 18 and Williams-Clark with 12, who was just one rebound shy of a double-double. Summers, Camryn Edmonson and Essence Jelks each added 7 points to the cause.

SMC will regroup and prepare for their trip to play the Prairie State Pioneers on Wednesday, November 5.
